My sister, Kelci, is a bit of a boho hippie herself (aren’t we all in a way?). She was the ‘naked’ baby of the family and clearly stated as a child the only thing she needed in this world was her mattress to sleep on (talk about minimalism). She would have rather ran barefoot in the rain than play dress up with her dolls (and can we blame her?). When I started planning out her bridal shower that I was to throw with my mom, I went straight over to her Pinterest page and found her bohemian themed shower she had already started planning herself.
Trying to find a location to throw a themed party like this was a bit of a mission. I was looking for something outdoorsy (January weather in Miami should have been a crisp 75-degree day) and a bare-boned kind of decor where I could go all out with the style decor we had wanted. I called and emailed several locations just to have to been told, “At least $20 per person”. This wasn’t even including all the champagne we would be indulging in. Hmmm…
My parent’s house was up for grabs but for those of you who are familiar with their house; it is anything but bare-boned. Most of the house has nautical decor galore and the patio where most of the party would take place looks like you have stepped inside a Florida Keys bar. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the way it has been set up but, it is anything but boho and more like it threw up a party in Key West.
In the end, after several responses from other locals, we decided to go with Mom and Dad’s house so I knew I had my work set out for me. I promised Kelci I would turn this Keys shindig into the boho party she had dearly wanted. I joke around with friends that I watched the entirety of season one of HBO’s West World on demand from my living room couch while preparing for this party. These hours were spent cutting and tying fabric making streamers and tassels, cutting out photo booth props, shopping through Etsy accounts for the perfect style welcome sign and others, and wrapping a hula hoop in lace, flowers, and pictures that I had sprayed gold.
It took us about eight hours on a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning to set up but as much work as it was, I truly enjoy planning these parties. Also, I have now learned just how ‘crafty’ I can be. Kelci was blown away to tears the moment she walked in the front door and I knew the job I had given myself had been worth every minute and penny spent.
